Published: April 1, 2012
A. Moody Burt III, an Episcopal priest who was rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in College Park for more than 20 years, died March 23 at his home in Pittsboro, N.C. He was 76.
He had lymphoma, said his wife, Catharine Burt.
The Rev. Burt first moved to the Washington area in 1969 and was the assistant minister of St. George’s Church in Arlington County. He became the rector of St. Andrew’s in 1973 and retired in 1997.
In the late 1980s, Rev. Burt helped establish a “safe haven” program in Prince George’s County, in which a network of local churches opened their doors to the homeless during the winter months. Today, more than 60 churches are involved in the effort.
Augustus Moody Burt III was a native of Greensboro, N.C., and a 1956 graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He received a master’s degree in divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1959.

His first marriage, to the former Theresa Gudger, ended in divorce.
