The Cardinal

A west-bound train takes me home.
I can’t wait to see my friend, smell the air, and walk the hills.
Charlottesville – Staunton -- Clifton Forge -- Covington.

Wonder why we sit here in the midst of stream and tree?
Hmm, my phone gets no signal here.
Ooh, I think I packed a brownie or two.
Will my friend wait for me?

Passengers start to roam from car to car.
Some get to stand between the cars for fresh air.
That man is going to see his sister in Beckley.
That woman is going to meet her husband in Lewisburg.
I think these children must be traveling alone.

Could it be a mudslide, or a bum engine, or a derailment?
Ah, another train approaches.
Those passengers look tired too.

Finally we move forward, we climb higher over the Alleghenies
I’ve lost track of the time.
The brownies are gone but the rocking of the train is calming.
As we pull into the station, I collect my stuff and look out the window.
He waited!
